It was a Tuesday. I know that because Tuesday is when the fish food delivery comes, and I was out on the porch waiting for the truck, and instead of hearing the hum of the pump, I heard nothing. Just silence and the sound of my own brain going, oh no.

The pond had been running for about eight months at that point. Two hundred gallons, maybe forty fish—a mix of shubunkin and some comets I’d picked up from a guy named Ray who runs a shop out of his garage. The water had that green-brown look that I’d convinced myself was “natural” and “established.” It was not natural. It was dirty.

I called Ray that afternoon. He answered on the third ring, which is fast for him.

“You got an all-in-one filter or a separate pump?” he asked.

“All-in-one,” I said. “One of those waterfall filter boxes.”

He made a sound. I won’t repeat it, but it wasn’t encouraging.

That phone call cost me about an hour of my life and a whole lot of pride. But it also taught me more than any YouTube video ever had.

What I Pulled Out of the Intake

There’s this idea that a pond filter is a set-it-and-forget-it thing. It is not. The filter is running constantly—there’s no “on” switch you flip for a few hours while you’re home. It’s like a heart. If it stops, the whole system starts dying in stages.

My original setup was simple: a submersible pump in the deepest part of the pond (about three feet down, in my case) connected by a hose to a plastic box that sat on the edge, where water trickled down over some foam pads and into a little waterfall. That box was supposed to be the biological filter—the place where bacteria would live and break down the fish waste into something less toxic. But the foam pads were not enough. They clogged fast, and the bacteria never really established because the water flow was too inconsistent.

When I pulled the pump out that Tuesday, the intake was covered in what looked like green snot. Slime algae, wrapped around the impeller. The pump wasn’t dead—it was choked. That’s the first thing to know: a pump that stops moving water is a pond that stops living.

I spent two hours with a toothbrush scrubbing that intake. I’m not exaggerating. A toothbrush. The water was cold, and I was kneeling on the damp concrete, and a neighbor walked by and asked if I was okay. I said I was fine. I was not fine.

The Three Jobs Nobody Told Me About

Let me back up. A pond filter does three things, and it’s important to understand all three even if you only end up worrying about two of them:

  1. Mechanical filtration — pulling out the visible junk. Leaves, fish poop, uneaten food, algae clumps. This is what the foam pads and filter brushes handle.
  2. Biological filtration — providing a home for bacteria that turn ammonia (from fish waste) into nitrite, then into nitrate. This is what the bio-media is for—those little plastic balls or ceramic rings that look like nothing much but are actually the most important part.
  3. Chemical filtration — using carbon or other media to pull out discoloration, odors, and some toxins. Most pond keepers skip this unless there’s a specific problem.

My original setup was doing maybe half of number one and barely any of number two. The foam pads caught the big stuff, but the water was still flowing too fast over too little surface area for enough bacteria to grow. And the bacteria need oxygen—if the water isn’t moving, they suffocate. So when the pump died, the bacteria died too.

By the time I noticed the silence, the ammonia in that water was probably already climbing. I tested it the next morning. 2 ppm. That’s not immediately fatal to goldfish, but it’s way too high for comfort. If I’d left it another day, maybe two, I’d have been looking at sick fish and a very expensive vet bill.

The Filtered Tank and a Snake Tattoo

The Pump Replacement

I drove to a place called The Filtered Tank—it’s on the outskirts of town, behind a laundromat that’s been closed for years. The guy at the counter had a snake tattoo going up his forearm and he asked what I was keeping.

“Goldfish,” I said. “Shubunkin and comets.”

“You need a pump that moves at least double your pond volume per hour,” he said. “Two hundred gallons, so four hundred gallons per hour minimum. And get one with a pre-filter.”

He showed me a pump called the Laguna Max-Flo 700. It was forty-two dollars. He also sold me a pre-filter sponge that attached to the intake—twelve dollars extra. I bought a separate inline filter too, a big canister thing with a handle on top that I could open and clean without taking apart the whole system.

“This one’s got a UV light built in,” he said, pointing at the canister. “Will clear up that green water in about three days.”

I didn’t believe him, but I was out ninety-three dollars by then, and I figured it was cheaper than losing the fish.

Installing the New Setup

I won’t pretend it was elegant. The canister filter sits on a piece of flagstone next to the pond, and the hose runs into the waterfall box. The pump is in the pond, with the pre-filter sponge on the intake. I used a short piece of flexible PVC to connect the pump to the canister, and another hose from the canister to the waterfall.

The trickiest part was getting the pump level. If it’s tilted, the impeller can seize up. I ended up setting it on a brick I’d pulled from my garden—one of those old red ones with a chip out of the corner. It’s still there, two years later.

When I turned it on, the water came through clear. I mean, not immediately—the first few minutes were just blasting out whatever green sludge had been sitting in the pipes. But by evening, the waterfall was actually clear. I could see the fish again.

Over-Feeding and Snail Eggs

The first week, I over-fed. I was worried the fish were stressed from the water change (I’d done a 30% water change the day after the pump died), so I gave them extra food. Big mistake. The ammonia spiked again, and I had to do a 50% change two days later. The water was cold, and I was tired, and I wanted to quit.

I called Ray again. This time he was outside, so I could hear birds in the background.

“You’re feeding them like they’re pets,” he said. “They’re fish. They don’t need three meals a day.”

“I know,” I said.

“Then stop.”

He was right. I cut back to once a day, just what they could eat in about two minutes. The algae slowed down. The water stayed clearer. The bacteria in that new canister filter finally established—it took about two weeks, during which time I tested the water every day and did multiple small changes.

Another problem: the pre-filter sponge. It catches a lot of gunk, which is great. But it also catches baby snails and tiny fish fry if you’ve got any. I lost a batch of shubunkin eggs that way. I learned to check the pre-filter every couple of days during spawning season and pick out anything alive before rinsing it.

What I’d Tell Someone Starting Fresh

If I could go back to the beginning of that first summer, here’s what I’d do differently:

  • Buy a pump with a pre-filter from day one. The little $12 sponge saved me hours of scrubbing.
  • Use a separate bio-filter, not just the foam pads in a waterfall box. A canister filter, a fluidized bed, even a bucket full of lava rock with a hose running through it—anything with more surface area than a slab of foam.
  • Don’t try to treat the water with chemicals unless you test first. I bought a bottle of “pond clarifier” that turned out to be just a flocculant—it made the junk clump together and sink, but it didn’t remove anything. The UV light was a hundred times more effective for the green water.
  • Test the water at least twice a week for the first month after setting it up, then once a week after that. The API Pond Master Test Kit costs about thirty dollars and it’s the best money I’ve spent on this hobby.
  • Clean the filter media in pond water, not tap water. If you rinse it under the hose, you’ll kill the bacteria. I use a bucket of pond water and squeeze the foam pads in it. The water that comes out is disgusting. I pour it on the lawn.

One thing I’ve noticed: the pond gets leaf litter in the fall, and that clogs the pre-filter faster than anything. Last October I was out there every three days with a net, scooping out maple leaves. My neighbor thought I was obsessive. She was probably right, but the fish made it through winter fine.

Pea Soup in July

Even with the UV light, I had a month of pea-soup water in July. The UV bulb was on, but I’d set the flow rate too high—the water was moving through the UV chamber too fast for the light to kill the algae. I slowed it down by pinching the outlet hose a little (a cheap solution that Ray actually recommended), and within a week it started clearing.

That’s the thing about pond systems: every adjustment changes something else. Slow down the flow for the UV, and you reduce turnover, which means the mechanical filter catches less. Speed it up, and the UV stops working. Find the middle ground that works for your specific setup, and then don’t touch it unless you have a reason.

I ended up at a flow rate where the pump pushes about 300 gallons per hour through the canister. That’s below the 400 GPH I’d planned for, but the fish are fine. The water is clear. The algae stays on the rocks where it belongs.

Eighteen Months and a Backup Pump in the Garage

The current setup has been running for about eighteen months. I’ve cleaned the canister filter maybe six times—not as often as I should, but often enough. The pre-filter sponge gets rinsed every two weeks. The pump is still going strong, though I bought a backup one when it was on sale last winter, just in case.
