The moment an angelfish pair decides to spawn is rarely convenient. For most keepers, it happens in a display tank where the only suitable surfaces are the heater cables, the intake tube of a canister filter, or — most frustratingly — the glass directly above a prized Amazon sword plant. A pair that chooses a sponge filter, particularly one that hasn’t been cleaned in three weeks, seems like a mistake in judgment. But the fish know something the keeper often doesn’t: that grimy sponge is the best possible nursery, and removing it is the fastest way to lose the spawn.
Angelfish are substrate spawners by instinct, meaning they prefer to lay eggs on a vertical or slightly angled surface. In the wild, that surface is usually a broad leaf or a submerged piece of wood. In captivity, they accept whatever is available. The dirty sponge filter is not a failure of husbandry. It is a biological choice the fish make because the surface offers exactly what a clean one cannot: a microbial film that signals safety, a textured grip for the adhesive eggs, and a stable water flow that the parents can accept or redirect with their own bodies.
The Surface the Fish Actually Want
A brand-new sponge filter, fresh out of the package, is a sterile plastic tube wrapped in a polished synthetic sheet. Angelfish will sometimes spawn on it anyway, but the eggs often fail within the first 48 hours. The problem is not the water chemistry. It is the surface itself.
The eggs of Pterophyllum scalare are adhesive, and they require a certain roughness to attach properly. A clean sponge has a uniform, manufactured texture. A used one, colonized by biofilm and microscopic algae, has a three-dimensional surface the eggs can grip. More importantly, that biofilm contains bacteria and protozoans that produce antibiotic compounds. The same slime layer that makes a dirty filter look unappealing to the keeper is, to the developing eggs, a chemical shield against fungal infection.
One keeper in Kuala Lumpur who runs a small breeding operation out of a converted garage keeps a dozen sponge filters cycling in a separate tank at all times. He rotates them into breeder tanks not when they are clean, but when they are visibly brown with accumulated detritus. The sponges are never scrubbed. They are squeezed out in tank water once every two months, and only if flow has dropped noticeably. His hatch rate on angelfish eggs, across seven breeding pairs, averages above 90 percent. Commercial hatcheries that use bare-bottom tanks with dedicated spawning cones often report rates closer to 60 percent, and they treat the water with methylene blue as a matter of routine.
Flow, Not Current
The second reason a sponge filter works is flow. Angelfish parents fan their eggs constantly, using their pectoral fins to create a gentle current that delivers oxygen and carries away waste. A sponge filter produces a diffuse, low-velocity current. The eggs are not blasted with a concentrated stream the way they would be from a powerhead or a canister filter return. The parents can position themselves between the sponge and the eggs and modulate the flow with their own bodies.
This is why removing the sponge filter, or swapping it for a clean one during the spawn, is almost always a mistake. The eggs have already adapted to the specific flow pattern. Change it, and the parents spend the next hour trying to compensate, fanning harder against a current that no longer matches their positioning. The eggs, meanwhile, lose the constant, gentle oxygenation they need in the first 72 hours.
In a tank where the pair spawned directly in front of the filter outflow, a keeper in Melbourne found that the eggs on the side facing the current all fungused within 36 hours. The eggs on the leeward side, where the parents could create their own micro-current, survived. The difference was not water quality. It was flow direction. The sponge filter, placed in a corner where its outflow dispersed against the glass, solved that problem entirely.
When to Actually Move the Eggs
There is a common recommendation to remove the eggs from the parents and raise them artificially. This is standard practice in commercial angelfish farms, where the goal is maximum production per tank. The parents are stripped of their spawn, and the keeper takes over egg care with airstones and fungicides. For a home breeder raising one or two clutches at a time, this is often the wrong approach.
Angelfish parents, particularly a bonded pair that has spawned together several times, are excellent caretakers. They recognize the eggs as their own. They eat dead eggs immediately, preventing fungal spread. They fan the eggs at a rhythm no airstone can match. A keeper who has never watched a pair methodically scrape fungus off individual eggs with their mouths has not seen angelfish at their best. Letting the parents do the work removes the most common failure point: the keeper’s own intervention.
The exception is if the pair spawns on a surface that cannot be left in the tank — a heater, a bare patch of glass, a piece of equipment that must be removed for maintenance. In that case, the eggs should be moved, but not to an incubator. They should be transferred to a spare sponge filter that has been cycled in the same tank for at least a month. A clean sponge is useless. A dry sponge is lethal. The eggs need the biofilm, and they need it immediately.
The Problem With Cleanliness
The impulse to scrub everything is the single most destructive habit in angelfish breeding. A keeper who scrubs the sponge filter before a spawn removes the biofilm. A keeper who vacuums the substrate too thoroughly removes the infusoria that the fry will need in their first days. A keeper who does a large water change right before the spawn may trigger the pair to hold off entirely, or worse, to spawn and then abandon the eggs.
The fish are not responding to aesthetics. They are responding to environmental cues. A tank that looks pristine to the human eye often reads, to an angelfish, as sterile and unsafe. The dirty sponge filter is not a compromise. It is a signal that the water contains enough microbial life to support fry.
One experienced breeder in Thailand keeps a dedicated “ugly” tank for conditioning pairs. The sponge filters in that tank are never cleaned. The walls have a thin film of algae. The substrate is bare but has a layer of mulm from the previous spawn. Pairs moved from that tank into a clean display tank, even with identical water parameters, often refuse to spawn for weeks. Pairs moved into another “ugly” tank spawn within days. The difference is not the fish. It is the surface.
How to Prepare a Sponge Filter for Breeding
The steps are straightforward, but they require patience. A new sponge filter needs at least six weeks in a cycled tank before it develops the biofilm that angelfish eggs will accept. A sponge that has been used in a display tank for three months is ideal, provided it has not been scrubbed or bleached.
The sponge should be positioned vertically, not horizontally. Angelfish prefer to lay eggs on a vertical surface where they can swim on either side. A sponge filter sitting flat on the bottom of the tank will be ignored. One mounted on a suction cup against the side glass, or standing upright on a weighted base, is more likely to be accepted.
Flow should be adjusted so the outflow hits the glass or a plant, not the eggs directly. A small piece of plastic mesh or a plant leaf placed between the sponge and the tank wall can create a sheltered zone where the eggs are protected from the main current. The parents will find that zone and use it.
If the pair has already spawned on a sponge filter, leave it alone. Do not remove the sponge to inspect the eggs. Do not squeeze it out. Do not change the water in the tank for at least 48 hours after the spawn. The parents will handle the eggs. The keeper’s job, for those first two days, is to do nothing.
What to Feed the Fry Once They Hatch
The eggs will hatch in three to four days at 80 degrees Fahrenheit. The fry will be attached to the sponge by a thread for another five to seven days. During this time, they do not need food. They are absorbing their yolk sacs, and they will tolerate being moved if necessary.
Once the fry are free-swimming, the sponge filter becomes a feeding station. The biofilm on the sponge is the first food. Infusoria, rotifers, and tiny crustaceans live in that film, and the fry graze on them constantly. A keeper who has scrubbed the sponge will need to provide microworms or vinegar eels within hours of the fry becoming free-swimming. A keeper who left the sponge alone has a natural food source that lasts for days.
After the first week, the fry need larger food. Newly hatched brine shrimp are the standard, but they must be offered close to the sponge. The fry are not strong swimmers yet. A keeper who feeds at the surface or the opposite end of the tank will watch most of the food go to waste.
The One Thing That Will Still Go Wrong
Even with a perfect sponge, perfect parents, and perfect water, angelfish spawns fail. The most common cause is not fungus, not water quality, and not poor nutrition. It is the parents themselves. A pair that spawns for the first time may eat the eggs within hours. A pair that is stressed by external noise, light changes, or tankmates may do the same. A pair that is disturbed by the keeper checking the eggs too often will abandon them.
The keeper in Kuala Lumpur keeps his breeder tanks covered on three sides. He uses a dim light on a timer. He does not open the tank for inspections during the first three days. He has learned, through dozens of failed spawns, that the best intervention is the one that never happens.
A pair that eats its first spawn is not a bad pair. It is an inexperienced pair. Most bonded angelfish pairs will figure out parenting by the third or fourth spawn. The keeper who leaves the dirty sponge filter in place, walks away, and lets the fish do what they have evolved to do will see that third spawn succeed.
The tank does not need to be clean. The sponge does not need to be fresh. The keeper does not need to be busy. The fish need the keeper to be still.
